SC3 is a so-called indie comic book containing comic stories from 45 artists, including editors, students, teachers, professional illustrators and technicians. The stories are about the Sichuan earthquake, the Olympics, SARS and bird flu.
Unlike common commercial comic books by Japanese masters that enchant readers in primary school, the stories in SC are much more abstract and delivered in a variety of styles. Some even resemble wood-block prints. Stories are short and rendered in black and white.
The English stated theme of this issue is “future,” but Hu Xiaojiang, one of the chief editors says “future” fails to capture the full meaning of the Chinese “qian tu”. The book is 640 pages with enough ink to hit 2.2 kilograms, printed in very limited 1000 copies only.
